Vaiśampāyana uvāca: pratigṛhītāś ca pāṇḍavāḥ pitur nidhanaṃ āvedayan; tasya aurdhvadehikaṃ nyāyataś ca kṛtavantaḥ. tāṃs tatra nivasataḥ pāṇḍavān bālyāt prabhṛti duryodhano nāmarṣayat.
Vaiśampāyana said: When the Pāṇḍavas had been received into the care of Bhīṣma and Dhṛtarāṣṭra, they informed them of their father’s death. Thereafter, they duly performed the prescribed post-funeral rites for him and continued living there. But Duryodhana, from childhood onward, could not bear the Pāṇḍavas residing alongside him.
Even amid loss, dharma is upheld through proper rites and truthful communication; at the same time, the passage highlights how envy and inability to tolerate others’ rightful place can become the moral root of later adharma and conflict.
After being taken in by Bhīṣma and Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the Pāṇḍavas report Pāṇḍu’s death, perform his aurdhvadehika rites according to custom, and remain in the Kuru household; Duryodhana, however, resents their presence from an early age.
