Educational Q&A

The verse foregrounds disciplined listening and faithful transmission: sacred history is to be received from an authoritative source (Vyāsa) and narrated completely and accurately, especially when it concerns one’s own lineage and responsibilities.

Vaiśampāyana addresses King Janamejaya and introduces the forthcoming account: he will recount, as he once heard from Vyāsa, the full and auspicious story of the origin and continuation of the king’s dynasty.
