अध्याय ९५: चित्राङ्गदस्य गन्धर्वेण सह संग्रामः तथा विचित्रवीर्यस्य राज्याभिषेकः
Chitrāṅgada’s duel with the Gandharva and Vicitravīrya’s consecration
व्यशीर्यत ततो राष्ट्र क्षयर्नानाविधैस्तदा । क्षुन्मृत्युभ्यामनावृष्ट्या व्याधिभिश्व॒ समाहतम्,इस तरह नाना प्रकारसे क्षय होनेके कारण वह सारा राज्य नष्ट-सा हो गया। सबको भूख, मृत्यु, अनावृष्टि और व्याधि आदिके कष्ट सताने लगे
vyaśīryata tato rāṣṭraṃ kṣayair nānāvidhais tadā | kṣunmṛtyubhyām anāvṛṣṭyā vyādhibhiś ca samāhatam ||
Vaiśampāyana said: Thereafter the kingdom began to crumble, worn down by many kinds of ruin. Struck by famine and death, by the failure of rains, and by diseases, the realm became as though destroyed.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse underscores a dharmic-political insight: when a realm loses stability and right order, misfortunes can compound—famine, death, drought, and disease—showing the vulnerability of society to cascading breakdown.
Vaiśampāyana narrates that the kingdom is being devastated: it is crumbling under various forms of decline and is afflicted simultaneously by hunger, mortality, lack of rainfall, and widespread disease.
