Chitrāṅgada’s duel with the Gandharva and Vicitravīrya’s consecration

vaiśampāyana uvāca | puṣkariṇyām ṛcīkaś ca bhūmanyor abhavan sutāḥ | teṣāṁ jyeṣṭhaḥ suhotras tu rājyam āpa mahīkṣitām |

Vaiśampāyana said: From Puṣkariṇī, sons were born to Bhūmanyu—Ṛcīka among them. Of these, Suhotra was the eldest; therefore he obtained the kingship among the rulers of the earth. Thus the custom of succession by seniority is affirmed: royal authority is received according to lineage-order, not seized by force.

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights orderly succession: the eldest son (jyeṣṭha) receives the kingdom, reflecting a dharma-informed social norm where authority is legitimized by lineage and established custom.

Vaiśampāyana continues a genealogical account, stating that Puṣkariṇī bore sons to Bhūmanyu; among them Suhotra was the eldest and therefore became king.
