Vaiśampāyana said: “O king Janamejaya, you are born in the Paurava line that descends from Pūru. Therefore, exercising self-mastery, you are to cause this kingdom to be governed for a thousand years.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Legitimate kingship is grounded in lineage and, more importantly, in vaśitva (self-mastery): a ruler should govern through restraint and disciplined administration, sustaining the realm over long time.
Vaiśampāyana addresses King Janamejaya, identifying him as born in Pūru’s Paurava line and exhorting him to rule—i.e., to ensure the kingdom is properly administered—for a long span, with control over the senses.
