Śaunaka said: “O noble one, since you are the son of Śunaka, you are known as ‘Śaunaka’. Śunaka was a man of great spiritual strength, a delight and pride of the entire Bhṛgu lineage. From the very time of his birth he remained devoted to intense austerity; therefore his steadfast fame spread everywhere.”
शौनक उवाच
The verse highlights how disciplined austerity (tapas) and inner excellence (sattva) become the basis of enduring reputation and honor, and how personal virtue reflects upon and uplifts one’s lineage.
Śaunaka addresses the interlocutor by explaining his patronymic name ‘Śaunaka’ (son/descendant of Śunaka) and then praises Śunaka’s greatness—his intense ascetic practice from birth and the widespread fame that followed.
