एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं विस्तरेण तपोधन । आनुपूर्व्या च मे शंस राज्ञो वंशकरान्‌ पृथक्‌,जनमेजयने पूछा--तपोधन! हमारे पूर्वज महाराज ययातिने, जो प्रजापतिसे दसवीं पीढ़ीमें उत्पन्न हुए थे, शुक्राचार्यकी अत्यन्त दुर्लभ पुत्री देवयानीको पत्नीरूपमें कैसे प्राप्त किया? मैं इस वृत्तान्तको विस्तारके साथ सुनना चाहता हूँ। आप मुझसे सभी वंश-प्रवर्तक राजाओंका क्रमश: पृथक्‌-पृथक्‌ वर्णन कीजिये
