Chapter 74: Non-anger, Forbearance, and the Ethics of Residence
स विजित्य महीपालांक्ष॒कार वशवर्तिन: । चचार च सतां धर्म प्राप चानुत्तमं यश:,उन्होंने सब राजाओंको जीतकर अपने अधीन कर लिया तथा सत्पुरुषोंके धर्मका पालन और उत्तम यशका उपार्जन किया
sa vijitya mahīpālān kṣitīṃ cakāra vaśavartinaḥ | cacāra ca satāṃ dharmaṃ prāpa cānuttamaṃ yaśaḥ ||
Having conquered the kings of the earth, he brought them under his control. Yet he also lived in accordance with the dharma upheld by the virtuous, and thereby attained unsurpassed renown.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Power and victory are ethically validated only when joined with sat-dharma—conduct aligned with the standards of the virtuous; such rule yields lasting, unsurpassed fame.
Vaiśampāyana describes a ruler who subdues other kings and brings them under his authority, while simultaneously maintaining righteous conduct, resulting in exceptional renown.
