Educational Q&A

The verse highlights dharmic social conduct: a visitor to a sacred space is respectfully questioned about identity and purpose. Such inquiry protects the sanctity of the āśrama while maintaining courtesy and moral order.

A speaker (Vaiśampāyana) reports a formal questioning at a sage’s hermitage: the newcomer is asked why they have come, what they intend to do, and who they are—framing the encounter within the norms of āśrama etiquette and responsibility.
