Duḥṣantasya Vana-praveśaḥ

King Duḥṣanta’s Entry into the Forest Hunt

teṣām aparimeyāṇāṃ nāmatheyāni sarvaśaḥ | na śakyāni samākhyātuṃ varṣāṇām ayutair api | ete tu kīrtitā mukhyā yair ākhyānam idaṃ tatam ||

“The names of those innumerable (kings and warriors) cannot be fully recounted in every detail—even if one were to spend tens of thousands of years. Therefore, only the principal ones are mentioned here, for it is through their deeds and stories that this great narrative has been spread out and made complete.”

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights the limits of exhaustive enumeration and the necessity of narrative selection: history becomes intelligible by focusing on key figures whose actions shape the larger ethical and social consequences.

The speaker explains that the assembled kings and warriors are too many to list completely, even over vast time; therefore only the foremost are named, since their stories provide the main threads by which the Mahābhārata’s account is unfolded.
