अभिगम्य च राजानमवदत् स्वं प्रयोजनम् । देहि मे खल्विमां राजन क्षत्रियाय महात्मने,अतः राजासे मिलकर उन्होंने अपना अभिप्राय इस प्रकार बताया--“महाराज! मुझ महामनस्वी क्षत्रियको आप अपनी यह पुत्री प्रदान कर दीजिये'
abhigamya ca rājānam avadat svaṃ prayojanam | dehi me khalv imāṃ rājan kṣatriyāya mahātmane ||
Having approached the king, he stated his own purpose: “O King, please grant me this maiden—(to be given) to a noble Kshatriya of great spirit.” The request is framed in the idiom of royal consent and socially sanctioned marriage, emphasizing propriety and the king’s role as guardian of the daughter’s dharma.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights dharmic procedure in marital arrangements: a suitor approaches respectfully, states his intention openly, and seeks the king’s consent, reflecting the ruler’s duty as guardian of social and familial order.
A person comes before the king and formally declares his purpose—requesting that the king give him the maiden (the king’s daughter), presenting the request in a socially legitimate and honorific manner.
