Having duly visited those sacred places, he then made gifts of wealth in the prescribed manner. When they reached the gateways of the Kaliṅga country, the Brāhmaṇas who had been accompanying the Pāṇḍavas—after taking leave of Kuntī’s son—turned back from there, O Bhārata.

Educational Q&A

The verse underscores dharmic conduct during pilgrimage: visiting sacred places with due observance (vidhivat) and giving charity (dāna) appropriately, along with courteous social ethics—companions formally taking leave before returning.

After completing visits to certain tīrthas and donating wealth there, the party reaches the border/gates of the Kaliṅga realm. The Brāhmaṇas who had been traveling with the Pāṇḍavas take Arjuna’s permission and then turn back from that point.
