Vaiśampāyana uvāca | brāhmaṇaṃ samupākṛtya yaśaḥ prāpya ca pāṇḍavaḥ | tataḥ tad godhanaṃ pārtho dattvā tasmai dvijātaye ||
Vaiśampāyana said: Having duly approached and satisfied the brāhmaṇa, the Pāṇḍava attained renown. Then Pārtha, giving that entire wealth of cattle to the twice-born, pleased him and thereby won spotless fame—showing that honor gained through generosity and reverence for the learned is held superior to mere possession.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
True honor (yaśas) arises from dharmic conduct—especially generosity (dāna) and respectful service to the learned—rather than from hoarding wealth. Giving godhana to a brāhmaṇa is presented as an ethically elevating act that brings lasting repute.
Arjuna (Pārtha), after properly approaching and pleasing a brāhmaṇa, gives him the cattle-wealth (godhana). This act earns Arjuna praise and renown, marking a narrative moment where his virtue is highlighted through charitable giving.
