“Therefore may I be released from sin—this is the boon I ask. And may these lakes I have made become sacred pilgrimage-fords, renowned upon the earth.”
राम उवाच
Even a powerful deed done in anger creates moral residue (pāpa) that calls for acknowledgement and expiation. The verse frames atonement not only as personal purification (release from sin) but also as turning the aftermath into public good—transforming man-made lakes into tīrthas that benefit society.
Paraśurāma, reflecting on the wrath-driven destruction of the Kṣatriyas, petitions for a boon: that he be freed from the sin of that act and that the reservoirs he created become celebrated pilgrimage sites on earth.
