“Know this: the number of foot-soldiers is one hundred thousand, plus nine thousand more, and a further three hundred and fifty men, O sinless one.” In this context the speaker is defining the standard count of infantry within an akṣauhiṇī, establishing an orderly measure for armies so that warfare, if undertaken, is conceived in regulated and accountable terms rather than as unbounded violence.
