Samantapañcaka Narrative and the Measure of an Akṣauhiṇī
जग्मतुस्तै: समागन्तुं शालां भार्गववेश्मनि । पञज्चानामेकपत्नीत्वे विमर्शो द्रपदस्य च,महामति बलराम एवं भगवान् श्रीकृष्णने जब भीमसेन एवं अर्जुनके अपरिमित और अतिमानुष बल-वीर्यको देखा, तब उन्हें यह शंका हुई कि कहीं ये पाण्डव तो नहीं हैं। फिर वे दोनों उनसे मिलनेके लिये कुम्हारके घर आये। इसके पश्चात् ट्रपदने 'पाँचों पाण्डवोंकी एक ही पत्नी कैसे हो सकती है'--इस सम्बन्धमें विचार-विमर्श किया
jagmatustaiḥ samāgantuṃ śālāṃ bhārgavaveśmani | pañcānām ekapatnītvē vimarśo drapadasya ca ||
Then those two set out to meet them, going to the hall at the dwelling of the Bhārgava. Thereafter, King Drupada also entered into deliberation on the question of how the five brothers could have a single wife—an issue that calls for careful reflection on propriety and dharma in extraordinary circumstances.
राम उवाच
The verse foregrounds dharmic inquiry: when an unprecedented situation arises—such as a single woman being wife to five brothers—one should not act rashly but engage in thoughtful deliberation (vimarśa) to align conduct with righteousness, social order, and higher purpose.
Two figures go to meet certain persons at a hall in the Bhārgava’s residence. Subsequently, King Drupada reflects and consults on the propriety and feasibility of the five brothers sharing one wife, setting up the ethical and legal discussion around Draupadī’s marriage.
