Ādi Parva, Adhyāya 188 — Draupadī-Vivāha Dharma-Vicāra

Debate on the Legitimacy of One Wife for Five

brāhmaṇārtha hi no rājyaṃ jīvitaṃ hi vasūni ca | putrapautraṃ ca yaccānyad asmākaṃ vidyate dhanam ||

Vaiśampāyana said: “For the sake of Brahmins, indeed, are our kingdom, our very life, and our treasures; for their sake are our sons and grandsons as well, and whatever other wealth we possess. All that we have is meant to serve the Brahmins—and for them we are prepared to relinquish it.”
