The Pāṇḍavas’ Journey toward Pāñcāla and News of the Svayaṃvara
भोजनीयानि पेयानि भक्ष्याणि विविधानि च । लेह्यान्यमृतकल्पानि चोष्याणि च तथार्जुन
bhojanīyāni peyāni bhakṣyāṇi vividhāni ca | lehyāny amṛtakalpāni coṣyāṇi ca tathārjuna ||
The Gandharva said: “Here are foods to be eaten, drinks to be sipped, and many kinds of provisions to be chewed—along with lickable delicacies, nectar-like in taste, and also items to be sucked. So it is, O Arjuna.”
गन्धर्व उवाच
The verse highlights the cultural ethic of honoring a guest or esteemed person through generous offering—abundance presented with refinement—reflecting social dharma expressed as hospitality and proper reception.
A Gandharva addresses Arjuna and enumerates an array of refreshments—foods, drinks, chewables, lickables, and suckables—describing them as nectar-like, indicating a lavish offering or reception in the ongoing episode.
