Vaiśampāyana said: “Here you have thoroughly studied all the treatises, and you have also received instruction in weapons—especially from Droṇa and from Gautama. In this situation, dear sons, I am thinking on every side about the protection of the kingdom, the conduct of its affairs, and the constant pursuit of its welfare. These my men—ever engaged in safeguarding the realm and its administration—repeatedly tell me day after day: ‘In the world, the city of Vāraṇāvata is the most delightful.’”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Competence in learning and arms must be matched by vigilant governance: rulers and elders should deliberate ‘on all sides’ for the kingdom’s protection, orderly administration, and continual welfare—showing that statecraft (rājya-vyavahāra) is an ethical responsibility, not merely power.
After the Pāṇḍavas have completed their studies and weapons training under Droṇa and Kṛpa, the speaker reports that royal advisers repeatedly praise the city of Vāraṇāvata as exceptionally pleasant—setting up the proposal to send the Pāṇḍavas there, a move that later becomes entangled with court politics.
