Ādi-parva Adhyāya 132 — Duryodhana’s Instructions to Purocana at Vāraṇāvata

स मुहूर्तादिव पुनद्रोंणस्तं प्रत्यभाषत । मानो दो घड़ी और बिताकर द्रोणाचार्य फिर उनसे बोले || ७४ $ ।। द्रोण उदाच अथ वृक्षमिमं मां वा भ्रातृन् वापि प्रपश्यसि,द्रोणगने कहा--क्या तुम इस वृक्षको, मुझको अथवा अपने भाइयोंको भी देखते हो?
sa muhūrtād iva punar droṇas taṃ pratyabhāṣata | atha vṛkṣam imaṃ māṃ vā bhrātṝn vāpi prapaśyasi |
After a brief interval, Droṇa addressed him again. He asked, “Do you see this tree, or me, or even your brothers?”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
Mastery requires disciplined attention: the student must learn to focus on the intended target and exclude distractions, so that power or skill is exercised responsibly and precisely.
Droṇa resumes testing the student after a short pause, asking whether he sees the tree, the teacher, or his brothers—probing whether the student’s perception is narrowed to the task or scattered among surrounding objects.
