Āstravidyā-Pradarśana: The Kuru Princes’ Public Demonstration of Arms (आस्त्रविद्या-प्रदर्शनम्)

tasmān nāhaṁ niyoktavyā tvayaiṣo 'stu varo mama | evaṁ pāṇḍoḥ sutāḥ pañca devadattā mahābalāḥ | vaiśampāyana uvāca |

Vaiśampāyana said: “Therefore you should not appoint me again for this act; let this be the boon I ask of you. Thus were born to Pāṇḍu five sons, bestowed by the gods and mighty in strength—renowned, increasing the glory of the Kuru line, and endowed with excellent marks. Like the moon, the sight of them was pleasing to all.”

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights ethical concern for propriety and reputation, while affirming that the Pāṇḍavas’ birth—though extraordinary—was divinely sanctioned and oriented toward the welfare and continuity of the Kuru lineage.

A woman (contextually Kuntī) asks Pāṇḍu not to commission her again for invoking a deity, requesting this as her boon; the narrator then summarizes that five mighty sons, granted by the gods, were born to Pāṇḍu and became beloved and auspicious for the Kuru family.
