kṛtakṛtyā bhaveyaṃ vai putradauhitrasaṃvṛtā | yadi satyaṃ tapastaptaṃ dattaṃ vāpyathavā hutam ||

Vaiśaṃpāyana said: “May I indeed become fulfilled, surrounded by sons and grandsons through a daughter. If I have truly practiced austerity, given in charity, or offered oblations in sacrifice, then may I obtain a daughter as well—so that, having both a son and a daughter’s son, I may be complete.”

Educational Q&A

The verse links personal fulfillment (kṛtakṛtyatā) with righteous acts—tapas (discipline), dāna (giving), and homa (sacrificial offering)—and expresses the cultural-ethical value placed on family continuity through both sons and a daughter’s lineage (dauhitra).

The speaker voices a wish to be ‘complete’ by having both sons and a grandson through a daughter, invoking the merit of austerity, charity, and sacrifice as grounds for receiving such a blessing.
