पाण्डोः तपः-प्रसङ्गः, ऋण-धर्मः, अपत्य-प्राप्ति-चिन्ता

Pāṇḍu’s Asceticism, the Doctrine of Debts, and Deliberations on Progeny

(पुत्रस्ते निर्मित: सुभ्रु शूणु यादृक्छुभानने ।। आदित्ये कुण्डले बिभ्रत्‌ कवचं चैव मामकम्‌ | शस्त्रास्त्राणामभेद्यं च भविष्यति शुचिस्मिते ।। न न किंचन देयं तु ब्राह्मणेभ्यो भविष्यति । चोद्यमानो मया चापि नाक्षमं चिन्तयिष्यति । दास्यत्येव हि विप्रेभ्यो मानी चैव भविष्यति ।।) 'सुन्दर मुख एवं सुन्दर भौंहोंवाली राजकुमारी! तुम्हारे लिये जैसे पुत्रका निर्माण होगा, वह सुनो--शुचिस्मिते! वह माता अदितिके दिये हुए दिव्य कुण्डलों और मेरे कवचको धारण किये हुए उत्पन्न होगा। उसका वह कवच किन्हीं अस्त्र-शस्त्रोंसे टूट न सकेगा। उसके पास कोई भी वस्तु ब्राह्मणोंके लिये अदेय न होगी। मेरे कहनेपर भी वह कभी अयोग्य कार्य या विचारको अपने मनमें स्थान न देगा। ब्राह्मणोंके याचना करनेपर वह उन्हें सब प्रकारकी वस्तुएँ देगा ही। साथ ही वह बड़ा स्वाभिमानी होगा। मत्प्रसादान्न ते राज्ञि भविता दोष इत्युत । एवमुक्त्वा स भगवान्‌ कुन्तिराजसुतां तदा,“रानी! मेरी कृपासे तुम्हें दोष भी नहीं लगेगा।” कुन्तिराजकुमारी कुन्तीसे यों कहकर प्रकाश और गरमी उत्पन्न करनेवाले भगवान्‌ सूर्यने उसके साथ समागम किया। इससे उसी समय एक वीर पुत्र उत्पन्न हुआ, जो सम्पूर्ण शस्त्रधारियोंमें श्रेष्ठ था। उसने जन्मसे ही कवच पहन रखा था और वह देवकुमारके समान तेजस्वी तथा शोभासम्पन्न था

vaiśampāyana uvāca |

putras te nirmitaḥ subhru śṛṇu yādṛk chubhānane ||

āditye kuṇḍale bibhrat kavacaṃ caiva māmakam |

śastrāstrāṇām abhedyaṃ ca bhaviṣyati śucismite ||

na na kiṃcana deyaṃ tu brāhmaṇebhyo bhaviṣyati |

codyamāno mayā cāpi nākṣamaṃ cintayiṣyati ||

dāsyaty eva hi viprebhyo mānī caiva bhaviṣyati ||

Vaiśampāyana said: “O fair-browed princess, O lovely-faced one—hear what sort of son will be fashioned for you. Smiling in purity, he will be born wearing the divine earrings of Āditya and my own cuirass; that armor will be unbreakable by weapons and missiles. For Brahmins there will be nothing that is ‘not to be given’ by him—no gift will be beyond him. Even when urged by me, he will not entertain in his mind any unworthy act or thought. When Brahmins request, he will indeed give them all manner of gifts; and yet he will also be deeply self-respecting and proud.”
