Hearing their words, the king reflected and, after consulting with his ministers, sought in due manner to appease the foremost of sages who was seated upon the stake.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse highlights a dharmic model of rulership: a king should deliberate carefully, consult wise counsellors, and respond to spiritual or moral authority with restraint and conciliation rather than impulsive force.
After hearing what others have said, the king makes a considered decision with his ministers and then attempts to pacify a great sage who is described as being seated on a stake (śūla), indicating a severe, striking situation that calls for tact and reverence.
