In that spacious assembly of sages whose minds were disciplined and purified, the narration is set to proceed in a solemn, truth-seeking atmosphere—one fit for an accurate account of events connected with seers and kings.
The verse highlights the ethical and spiritual qualification of the audience: a truthful, disciplined narration belongs in a setting of self-controlled sages, implying that sacred history (itihāsa) is best received and preserved by purified minds.
The scene is established: a large assembly of spiritually mature sages is gathered, creating the formal context in which the forthcoming account of the Mahābhārata will be narrated.
