Even though a prior curse had been pronounced, the birth of sons to the two mothers became possible for the sake of preserving the family’s dharma. By resorting to the sacred mantra-knowledge obtained from Durvāsas—an upaniṣadic, authoritative means connected with Dharma—Kuntī and Mādrī were able to receive the approach of the gods: Dharma, Vāyu, Śakra (Indra), and the two Aśvin twins. Through their grace were born Yudhiṣṭhira, Bhīmasena, Arjuna, and Nakula–Sahadeva.

Educational Q&A

The verse frames the extraordinary births of the Pāṇḍavas as ethically grounded: preserving kula-dharma can justify invoking sacred means, and divine powers are portrayed as cooperating with righteous intent rather than mere desire.

It explains how Kuntī and Mādrī, despite an earlier curse affecting progeny, could still have children by using the mantra-knowledge received from Durvāsas, thereby summoning Dharma, Vāyu, Indra, and the Aśvin twins, who fathered the five Pāṇḍavas.
