नरकेषु महद्दुःखमेतद्यत्स्वर्गवासिनः / दृश्यते नात्र मोदन्ते पात्यमानास्तु नारकैः
narakeṣu mahadduḥkhametadyatsvargavāsinaḥ / dṛśyate nātra modante pātyamānāstu nārakaiḥ
In the hells there is a great torment: even the dwellers of heaven are seen there. In that place they do not rejoice; rather, cast down, they become like the denizens of hell.
Lord Vishnu (narrating to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Afterlife Stage: Naraka
Concept: Even those who enjoyed svarga can be cast down to naraka; pleasure does not guarantee permanence.
Vedantic Theme: Anityatva of bhoga and loka; saṃsāra’s reversals; need for mokṣa beyond merit/demerit cycles.
Application: Do not rely on status, prosperity, or ‘good times’ as proof of lasting security; practice steady dharma and seek liberation-oriented devotion/knowledge.
Primary Rasa: bhayanaka
Secondary Rasa: karuna
Type: hell-realm
Related Themes: Garuda Purana Pretakalpa: descriptions of narakas and the fall after puṇya-kṣaya; warnings against pride in svarga
This verse highlights Naraka as a real post-death consequence of karma, so severe that even those who once enjoyed Svarga may be seen there when their merit is exhausted or outweighed by sin.
It implies the soul’s post-mortem journey is not fixed: one may rise to Svarga through merit, yet later fall into Naraka when the balance of karma changes, showing the impermanence of heavenly enjoyment.
Do not rely only on “good results” or status; cultivate sustained dharma, restraint from harmful acts, and sincere atonement, since karmic consequences can reverse one’s condition after death.
