punarnaivaṃ kariṣyāmi bhuktamātra ihodarāt / tathātathā yatiṣyāmi garbhaṃ nāpnomyahaṃ yathā
“Never again will I act like this—living here only to fill my belly. I will strive in every way, so that I may not enter a womb again.”
A suffering soul (preta) expressing remorse and resolve (as described by Lord Vishnu to Garuda in Preta-kanda context)
Concept: Renunciation of belly-centered living and deliberate striving to end the cycle of womb-entry (punarjanma).
Vedantic Theme: Mumukṣutva (desire for liberation) and niścaya (firm resolve) as the engine of sādhana; saṃsāra seen as repeated embodiment.
Application: Adopt disciplines that reduce compulsive consumption (moderation, fasting, mindful eating), and commit to daily spiritual practice aimed at liberation (japa, svādhyāya, satsanga).
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: karuna
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 2.32.63–67 (nirveda leading to resolve; then description of fetal turning and birth pains)
This verse frames bodily appetite as a symbol of sense-driven life that strengthens karmic bondage; the soul resolves to renounce such living to avoid further rebirth.
It reflects the post-death awakening of remorse: after experiencing consequences, the soul vows disciplined effort (yatiṣyāmi) to prevent returning to the womb (garbha), i.e., to end repeated births.
Practice moderation in food and pleasures, cultivate self-restraint and dharmic conduct, and orient life toward liberation-focused effort rather than mere consumption.
