hariruvāca / śṛṇu māheśvarīṃ pūjāṃ kathyamānāṃ vṛṣadhvaja / ādau snātvā tathācamya hyāsane copaviśya ca
Hari said: “O Vṛṣadhvaja (Śiva), listen to the Māheśvarī worship as it is taught. First, having bathed and then performed ācamana (ritual sipping for purification), one should sit upon a seat.”
Lord Vishnu (Hari)
Concept: Śauca and niyama as prerequisites for effective worship: snāna, ācamanam, proper āsana.
Vedantic Theme: External discipline supports internal sattva-śuddhi, enabling steadiness of mind for upāsanā.
Application: Before any spiritual practice: cleanse body, regulate breath and speech, sit with stability; treat preparation as part of the sādhana.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Type: ritual-space
Related Themes: Garuda Purana ritual preliminaries: śauca, ācamanam, āsana, nyāsa (immediately following verses)
This verse sets the ritual foundation: physical bathing and the purificatory act of ācamana are prescribed as the first steps, establishing śauca (purity) before beginning Māheśvarī worship.
It does not describe the soul’s post-death journey here; instead, it teaches disciplined preparation for worship—purity, order, and reverence—which the Purana presents as supportive of dharma and spiritual progress.
Before prayer or meditation, begin with basic cleanliness, a brief purification practice (like ācamana or mindful rinsing), and a stable seated posture—prioritizing readiness and respect in daily worship.
