Speech, the hands, the feet, the anus, and the generative organ—along with the mind as an internal faculty; and the ears, skin, eyes, tongue, and nose—these are said to be the faculties, together with the five vital airs.
Lord Viṣṇu (speaking to Garuḍa/Vainateya)
Concept: Lists karmendriyas (speech, hands, feet, anus, genitals), mind as inner faculty, jñānendriyas (ear, skin, eye, tongue, nose), and five vāyus.
Vedantic Theme: Indriya-viveka; distinction between instruments (karaṇa) and the knower (jñātṛ/sākṣin); functional anatomy of subtle body.
Application: Mindful governance of senses and actions: treat speech and organs as tools; practice pratyāhāra (sense-withdrawal) and ethical speech/action as preparation for contemplation.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.239.2 (karmendriyas and liṅga-śarīra context); Garuda Purana 1.239.10 (prāṇa support and witness across states)
This verse lists the operative and cognitive faculties (speech, hands, feet, excretory and generative organs; hearing, touch, sight, taste, smell) along with mind and the five vital airs, indicating the functional equipment through which karma is performed and experienced.
By identifying the senses, mind, and vital airs, the text points to the subtle apparatus associated with the jīva that governs perception and action; this framework is used in the Garuḍa Purāṇa to explain how karmic impressions continue beyond the gross body.
Guard the senses and regulate breath and mind: disciplined speech, ethical action, and mindful control of sensory cravings reduce harmful karma and support dharmic living.
