From Brahman to the Elements: Subtle–Gross Body, Prāṇa, States of Consciousness, and Mahāvākya Realization
अग्नेरापस्ततः पृथ्वी प्रपञ्चाकृतिसूतिका / ततः सप्तदशं लिङ्गं पञ्चकर्मेन्द्रियाणि च
agnerāpastataḥ pṛthvī prapañcākṛtisūtikā / tataḥ saptadaśaṃ liṅgaṃ pañcakarmendriyāṇi ca
From fire arise the waters; from waters comes the earth, the womb that gives rise to the manifested universe. From that evolution emerges the seventeenfold subtle body, along with the five organs of action.
Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Agni gives rise to waters; waters to earth; from this evolution arises the seventeenfold liṅga (subtle body) and the five organs of action.
Vedantic Theme: Upādhi-śarīra-viveka; prakṛti evolutes as instruments; the Self is distinct from the constructed psychophysical aggregate.
Application: Reflect on body and faculties as assembled instruments; cultivate disidentification and responsible use of karmendriyas (speech, hands, etc.).
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Type: cosmic principle
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.239.1 (earlier links in element chain); Garuda Purana 1.239.3 (enumeration of karmendriyas, jñānendriyas, mind, vāyus)
This verse links cosmic evolution with the formation of the subtle body, indicating that embodied experience and action operate through a structured inner apparatus (liṅga) that includes the organs of action.
By pointing to the liṅga-śarīra and karmendriyas, it implies that the soul’s journey and karmic consequences are mediated through the subtle body and its capacities for action, which continue to shape experience beyond gross physical change.
Recognize that actions (karma) are performed through the karmendriyas; disciplined, ethical use of speech, hands, and conduct helps purify karmic momentum and supports spiritual progress.
