Jambu-fruit and turmeric, along with the slough of a serpent—this fumigation removes all kinds of fevers, and it also cures the quartan fever.
Lord Vishnu (to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Concept: Material substances, when properly combined and applied (dhūpa), can remove suffering; efficacy depends on correct procedure.
Vedantic Theme: Embodied means (upāya) within prakṛti used for duḥkha-nivṛtti; orderliness of action yields results.
Application: Prepare fumigation using jambu fruit, turmeric, and serpent slough; administer as dhūpa for fever conditions including quartan fever.
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: bibhatsa
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.183 (dhūpa and dravya-yoga remedies for jvara)
This verse presents dhūpa as a practical therapeutic method—using specific substances to produce medicinal smoke that is said to dispel fevers, showing the Purana’s inclusion of ritual-therapeutic knowledge.
It does not directly describe the soul’s journey; instead, it belongs to an instructional section where Vishnu teaches Garuda applied remedies and protective measures used in human life.
Treat it as a traditional reference: consult qualified practitioners before using any fumigation or animal-derived materials, and take the broader takeaway that disciplined, knowledge-based care is valued alongside spiritual practice.
