रोचनागन्धुपुष्पाणि निम्बपुष्पं प्रियङ्गवः / कुङ्कमं चन्दनञ्चैव तिलकेन जगद्वशेत्
rocanāgandhupuṣpāṇi nimbapuṣpaṃ priyaṅgavaḥ / kuṅkamaṃ candanañcaiva tilakena jagadvaśet
With fragrant blossoms—such as rocanā, neem-flowers, and priyaṅgu—together with saffron and sandalwood, one should apply a tilaka; by that tilaka one brings the world under one’s influence.
Lord Vishnu (speaking to Garuda)
Concept: Use of aromatic botanicals and sacred cosmetics as a ritualized act aimed at vaśīkaraṇa (influence).
Vedantic Theme: Karma-kāṇḍa pragmatics—belief in efficacy of material-ritual means; attachment to outcomes (phala-āśā).
Application: If used, reinterpret as auspicious self-care and devotional tilaka rather than coercion; focus on inner qualities over external manipulation.
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shringara
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.178.20 (mantra support for mohana/saubhāgya); Garuda Purana 1.178.21 (lepa/dhūpa/pushpa-sugandha as vaśīkaraṇa)
The verse presents tilaka—made with specific fragrant and auspicious substances—as a means to enhance one’s auspicious presence and social influence (winning goodwill and compliance).
This specific shloka is primarily a ritual/auspicious-practice instruction (tilaka and its ingredients), rather than a direct description of the soul’s post-death journey or Yama’s realm.
Adopt a sattvic, traditional tilaka practice using clean, respectful materials (like sandalwood and kuṅkuma) as part of daily worship, cultivating dignity, discipline, and positive conduct that naturally increases trust and goodwill.
