Nidāna of Vātarakta and Āvaraṇa of Vāyu; Doṣa-wise Lakṣaṇas and Triphalā-Yoga Remedies
त्वङ्मांसाश्रयमत्तानं तत्पूर्वं जायते ततः / कालान्तरेण गम्भीरं सर्वधातूनभिद्रवेत्
tvaṅmāṃsāśrayamattānaṃ tatpūrvaṃ jāyate tataḥ / kālāntareṇa gambhīraṃ sarvadhātūnabhidravet
First it arises as a wasting affliction lodged in the skin and flesh; then, as time passes, it becomes deep-seated and assails all the bodily dhātus (tissues).
Lord Vishnu (narrating to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Dosha: Vata
Concept: Layered progression of disease from superficial dhātus to deeper systemic involvement over time.
Vedantic Theme: Duhkha-darshana (clear seeing of embodied suffering) as a spur to right living and discernment.
Application: Treat early when confined to skin/muscle; monitor chronicity; adopt diet and routines that prevent dhātu-kṣaya and vāta aggravation.
Primary Rasa: karuna
Secondary Rasa: bhayanaka
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.167 (dhātu involvement and chronic progression described across verses 8–12)
It conveys severity: the affliction is not superficial but can become deep and systemic, emphasizing the intensity of embodied consequences.
By mapping a progression of torment, it reinforces the Purana’s moral psychology: actions have consequences that can mature over time and become harder to escape.
Address harmful habits early, practice dharmic restraint, and prioritize timely correction—because delayed action allows problems to become ‘deep-seated,’ as the verse warns.
