Nidāna of Vātarakta and Āvaraṇa of Vāyu; Doṣa-wise Lakṣaṇas and Triphalā-Yoga Remedies
वायोरावरणं वातो बहुभेदं प्रचक्षते / पित्तलिङ्गावृते दाहस्तृष्णा शूलं भ्रमस्तमः
vāyorāvaraṇaṃ vāto bahubhedaṃ pracakṣate / pittaliṅgāvṛte dāhastṛṣṇā śūlaṃ bhramastamaḥ
The obstruction (āvaraṇa) of Vāyu is taught as having many varieties. When Vāta is covered by the signs of Pitta, there arise burning sensation, thirst, pain, dizziness, and darkness of perception.
Lord Vishnu (in instruction to Garuda/Vinata-putra)
Dosha: Pitta
Concept: Āvaraṇa theory: vāta dysfunction manifests differently when covered by other doṣa-signatures; pitta-āvaraṇa yields dāha, tṛṣṇā, śūla, bhrama, tamaḥ.
Vedantic Theme: Interdependence and superimposition (āvaraṇa as ‘covering’) as an explanatory model; clarity requires discerning the covering factor, not only the disturbed principle.
Application: When burning and thirst dominate alongside vāta-type pain/instability, suspect pitta-covering of vāta; choose cooling, pitta-pacifying measures while addressing vāta obstruction clinically.
Primary Rasa: bhayanaka
Secondary Rasa: raudra

Āvaraṇa is a condition where the normal movement and function of Vāyu/Vāta is blocked or overlaid by another doṣa’s influence, producing mixed and distinctive symptoms.
The verse lists burning sensation, thirst, pain, dizziness, and a sense of darkness or obscuration (tamāḥ) as key indicators.
If heat signs (burning, thirst) appear alongside Vāta-type disturbance (pain, dizziness), consider it a mixed pattern and prioritize balancing measures that reduce heat while supporting stable movement.
