Visarpa Nidāna-Lakṣaṇa
Causes, Types, and Prognosis of Rapidly Spreading Eruptive Disorders
मर्मानुसारी वीसर्पः स्याद्वातो ऽतिबलस्ततः / व्यथते ऽङ्गं हरेत्संज्ञां निद्राञ्च श्वासमीरयेत्
marmānusārī vīsarpaḥ syādvāto 'tibalastataḥ / vyathate 'ṅgaṃ haretsaṃjñāṃ nidrāñca śvāsamīrayet
The vīsarpa spreads along the vital points (marmas); then vāta grows exceedingly strong. The limbs ache fiercely, consciousness may be taken away, sleep is disturbed, and breathing becomes labored.
Lord Vishnu (in discourse to Garuda/Vinatā-putra)
Dosha: Vata
Concept: Marmānusāritva and vāta-prakopa as markers of dangerous systemic involvement.
Vedantic Theme: Body as a field of changing doṣas; awareness fosters vairāgya and prudent action.
Application: Recognize marma involvement, syncope tendency, insomnia, and dyspnea as red flags; prioritize vāta-pacifying and life-supporting interventions under expert care.
Primary Rasa: bhayanaka
Secondary Rasa: karuna
Related Themes: Garuda Purana 1.163 (vīsarpa progression; vāta aggravation; marma involvement)
It indicates a condition that tracks through vital points, implying higher danger and deeper systemic involvement.
Indirectly, it highlights how severe vāta disturbance can disrupt consciousness and breath—states traditionally linked with critical transitions in life, but the verse itself is clinical rather than afterlife-focused.
Severe pain with altered consciousness or breathing difficulty is a red-flag emergency—seek immediate professional care.
