What the texts say
In the Mudgala Purana, Vighnaraja is a form of Ganesha, the embodiment of Brahman, who is praised as dwelling in the heart. Mudgala Purana 1.4.19 Hymns in the same Purana say that his elephant face is the form of Truth, and that saints hold him in their hearts as the essence of Yoga. Mudgala Purana 7.9.18, 7.9.19 Another verse says that Vighnaraja, in his incarnation, is the killer of Mamatasura, the demon of attachment. Mudgala Purana 1.20.11 The Purana calls Vighnaraja the destroyer of the obstacles of his devotees, and says that by his grace Shiva, Vishnu and all other beings destroy invincible obstacles. Mudgala Purana 2.5.45, 2.18.33 One verse bows to Vighnaraja as one who loves devotion and removes obstacles for his devotees yet creates them for those devoid of devotion, and who, when pleased, grants both worldly enjoyment and liberation. Mudgala Purana 8.49.40
