Bhagavān and Bhakti as the Supreme Dharma
नष्टप्रायेष्वभद्रेषु नित्यं भागवतसेवया । भगवत्युत्तमश्लोके भक्तिर्भवति नैष्ठिकी ॥ १८ ॥
naṣṭa-prāyeṣv abhadreṣu nityaṁ bhāgavata-sevayā bhagavaty uttama-śloke bhaktir bhavati naiṣṭhikī
By constant service to the Bhāgavatam and by serving the pure devotee, the heart’s inauspicious burdens are almost destroyed, and loving bhakti to Bhagavān, the Uttamaśloka, becomes firmly established.
Here is the remedy for eliminating all inauspicious things within the heart, which are considered to be obstacles in the path of self-realization. The remedy is the association of the Bhāgavatas. There are two types of Bhāgavatas, namely the book Bhāgavata and the devotee Bhāgavata. Both the Bhāgavatas are competent remedies, and both of them or either of them can be good enough to eliminate the obstacles. A devotee Bhāgavata is as good as the book Bhāgavata because the devotee Bhāgavata leads his life in terms of the book Bhāgavata and the book Bhāgavata is full of information about the Personality of Godhead and His pure devotees, who are also Bhāgavatas. Bhāgavata book and person are identical.
It says that by constant service to the Bhāgavata (the scripture and the devotee), inauspicious impurities are almost completely destroyed, enabling genuine devotion to arise.
Because the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya ask for the essence of dharma for Kali-yuga, and Sūta explains that regular hearing and serving the Bhāgavata is the practical means that purifies the heart and establishes firm devotion to the Lord.
Set a daily practice of hearing/reading Srimad Bhagavatam and regularly associate with, serve, and learn from sincere devotees—this sustained engagement gradually clears negative habits and strengthens steady devotion.
