See how smoke encircles the sky like a ring. The earth, with its mountains, is throbbing. Hear the mighty thunder without clouds, and behold lightning in the clear blue.
This verse describes cosmic disturbances—smoky directions, trembling earth and mountains, and thunderous crashes—signaling an inauspicious shift in the world’s condition after Krishna’s disappearance.
Arjuna reports the abnormal, fearful signs to Yudhiṣṭhira because they indicate a grave change in the cosmic order, connected with Krishna’s withdrawal and the approaching influence of Kali.
The verse reminds one to seek shelter in devotion and dharma when instability increases—strengthening sādhana, truthfulness, and reliance on the Lord rather than external security.
