Śrāddhadeva Manu’s Sons: Pṛṣadhra’s Curse and Renunciation; Genealogies of Nariṣyanta and Diṣṭa
मरुत्तस्य दम: पुत्रस्तस्यासीद् राज्यवर्धन: । सुधृतिस्तत्सुतो जज्ञे सौधृतेयो नर: सुत: ॥ २९ ॥
maruttasya damaḥ putras tasyāsīd rājyavardhanaḥ sudhṛtis tat-suto jajñe saudhṛteyo naraḥ sutaḥ
Marutta’s son was Dama; Dama’s son was Rājyavardhana. Rājyavardhana begot Sudhṛti, and Sudhṛti’s son was Nara (Saudhṛteya).
In this verse, Nara is identified as the son of Sudhṛti, and therefore he is called Saudhṛteya (“descendant/son of Sudhṛti”).
Śukadeva narrates the royal lineages (vaṁśas) to preserve sacred history, show the continuity of dharma through generations, and situate later events and personalities within a verified dynastic context.
They teach continuity, responsibility, and how one’s actions affect future generations—encouraging readers to live dharmically and leave a spiritually beneficial legacy.
