Genealogies of Svāyambhuva Manu, the Appearance of Yajña, and Atri’s Sons
Brahmā–Viṣṇu–Śiva Expansions
तुषिता नाम ते देवा आसन्स्वायम्भुवान्तरे । मरीचिमिश्रा ऋषयो यज्ञ: सुरगणेश्वर: ॥ ८ ॥
tuṣitā nāma te devā āsan svāyambhuvāntare marīci-miśrā ṛṣayo yajñaḥ sura-gaṇeśvaraḥ
In the reign of Svāyambhuva Manu, these sons became the devas known collectively as the Tuṣitas. Marīci became chief among the ṛṣis, and Yajña became the king of the demigods—Indra.
During the life of Svāyambhuva Manu, six kinds of living entities were generated from the demigods known as the Tuṣitas, from the sages headed by Marīci, and from descendants of Yajña, king of the demigods, and all of them expanded their progeny to observe the order of the Lord to fill the universe with living entities. These six kinds of living entities are known as manus, devas, manu-putras, aṁśāvatāras, sureśvaras and ṛṣis. Yajña, being the incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, became the leader of the demigods, Indra.
They are the demigods presiding in Svāyambhuva Manu’s Manvantara, identified here as the ruling deva group for that era.
Because in that Manvantara, Yajña (a manifestation of the Supreme Lord) assumes the leadership of the celestial administrators, functioning as the sura-gaṇeśvara.
It highlights that cosmic administration changes with time, yet divine order is sustained by the Lord—encouraging steadiness in dharma and devotion amid changing circumstances.
