The Future Manus and the Avatāras in Their Manvantaras
श्रीशुक उवाच मनुर्विवस्वत: पुत्र: श्राद्धदेव इति श्रुत: । सप्तमो वर्तमानो यस्तदपत्यानि मे शृणु ॥ १ ॥
śrī-śuka uvāca manur vivasvataḥ putraḥ śrāddhadeva iti śrutaḥ saptamo vartamāno yas tad-apatyāni me śṛṇu
Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: The present Manu, known as Śrāddhadeva, is the son of Vivasvān, the presiding deity of the sun. He is the seventh Manu. Now hear from me as I describe his sons.
This verse identifies Vaivasvata Manu as the son of Vivasvān (the sun-god) and says he is known as Śrāddhadeva, the seventh Manu presiding in the current manvantara.
Śukadeva is continuing the Bhagavatam’s manvantara narration, introducing the present Manu and preparing Parīkṣit Mahārāja to hear the lineage and notable personalities born in that dynasty.
It trains the reader to see history as guided by dharma and divine order, encouraging respect for sacred tradition, responsibility to one’s duties, and faith that God’s plan unfolds through time.
