Mantra 1
Hither, even now, O Aśvins, come ye twain to Vatsa’s aid. Grant him a broad, wolf-free shelter; drive ye away the harms that press.
Mantra 2
What strength is in mid-air, what in the heaven, what followeth after the fivefold race of men—That manly puissance, O Aśvins, bestow ye here.
Mantra 3
The wondrous works of you twain, O Aśvins, which the inspired have wholly handled in their praise—Even so, of Kāṇva’s call take heed; awake thereto.
Mantra 4
This Gharma, O Aśvins, for you is sprinkled round with laud; This Soma, honey-rich, O ye of prize-winning wealth, whereby ye marked (and mastered) Vṛtra.
Mantra 5
What in the waters, what in the forest-lord, what in the herbs, O ye of many marvels, hath been wrought—Therewith, O Aśvins, succour me; make me safe.
It is used to invoke the Aśvin twins for immediate protection, removal of harms, and the settling of nṛmṇa—vital strength, success, and well-being—in the person for whom it is recited.
No. It works as a praise-and-invocation hymn. If desired, simple ritual supports like water sprinkling, a warm offering (gharma symbolism), or a sweet drink (soma symbolism) can be added.
Vṛtra represents blockage and adversity; recalling the Aśvins’ mastery over such obstruction strengthens the petition. Gharma and soma name effective ritual media through which praise is offered and power is ‘activated’ for protection and vigor.
