An ally, even when not paid and even when separated by distance, undertakes necessary tasks; it counters the rear-enemy (pārṣṇigrāha), the immediate assailant (āsāra), the hostile power, and forest-tribal threats; and it assists with funds, force, and territory—therefore, in a crisis, the ally’s contribution is decisive.
Rear enemies, immediate attackers, principal hostile states, and forest/irregular forces.
Money (kośa), coercive power/troops (daṇḍa), and territorial support (bhūmi: bases, access, buffers).
