Merchants, in enclosed and partitioned rooms, should through their own maidservants of pleasing appearance ascertain the condition/intent of newcomers, residents, and those moving about in disguise—especially persons who are intoxicated or asleep.
Controlled spaces reduce eavesdropping risk, allow discreet observation, and enable systematic screening of patrons for threats, fraud, or covert activity.
They function as unobtrusive human sensors—eliciting conversation, observing behavior, and identifying disguised actors without provoking suspicion.
