Śravaṇa–Kīrtana–Manana: Definitions and Hierarchy of Śaiva Sādhanā (श्रवणकीर्तनमनन-निरूपणम्)
The sages (Munis) of Naimiṣāraṇya
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Jyotirlinga: Viśvanātha
Sthala Purana: The sages’ inquiry about śravaṇa–manana–kīrtana aligns with Kāśī’s identity as the kṣetra of upadeśa and liberation, where hearing and repeating Śiva’s name and teachings is held to confer mokṣa; Viśvanātha is praised as the Lord who grants jñāna and final release to the bound soul (paśu).
Significance: Śiva-kathā-śravaṇa and nāma-kīrtana in the Lord’s kṣetra are treated as direct aids to purification (citta-śuddhi) and grace (anugraha), culminating in liberation.
Type: stotra
Role: teaching
This verse frames the core sādhanā of Shaiva devotion: receiving Śiva-tattva through śravaṇa (right hearing), stabilizing it through manana (reasoned contemplation), and ripening it through kīrtana (devotional remembrance). It signals a disciplined path where knowledge and devotion work together toward Śiva’s grace and liberation.
By asking how to perform kīrtana and śravaṇa properly, the sages point to structured worship where Saguna Śiva (often approached through the Śiva-liṅga) is praised, remembered, and understood through scripture and tradition—so devotion is not merely emotional, but aligned with right doctrine and practice.
The verse directly recommends three linked practices: listening to Śiva Purāṇa/Śiva-tattva teachings (śravaṇa), reflecting on their meaning until doubt clears (manana), and regular chanting/praise of Śiva (kīrtana), commonly expressed through Nāma-japa such as “Om Namaḥ Śivāya.”
