Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Kālāntaka
Jyotirlinga: Mahākāleśvara
Sthala Purana: Mahākāla symbolizes Śiva’s power to cut down time-bound bondage; the ‘axe of Śiva’s Name’ aligns with Mahākāla’s saṃhāra of the roots of saṃsāra (karmic bondage).
Significance: Severing deep-rooted karmic tendencies; nāma-japa as a decisive inner ‘cut’ leading toward fearlessness and detachment.
Type: panchakshara
Role: liberating
It teaches that the deepest causes of bondage—root-sins that perpetuate saṃsāra—are cut down by sincere remembrance and repetition of Śiva’s Name, because the Lord (Pati) alone can remove the bonds (pāśa) afflicting the soul (paśu).
Śiva’s Name is treated as a direct, accessible form of Saguna grace; just as Linga-worship gives a tangible focus for devotion, nāma-japa gives a sonic focus that invokes Śiva’s presence and purifies the devotee’s inner instrument (antaḥkaraṇa).
Daily Shiva-nāma-japa—especially the Panchākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”—with steady attention and devotion; it can be paired with traditional Shaiva supports like Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) and Rudrākṣa to stabilize practice.
