Mantra Efficacy, Removal of Obstacles, and the Role of Faith/Discipline
यद्यास्तिकस्सुधर्मिष्ठो मान्यो वा यो ऽपि कोपि वा । तमुद्दिश्यापि नो कुर्यादाततायिनमप्युत
yadyāstikassudharmiṣṭho mānyo vā yo 'pi kopi vā | tamuddiśyāpi no kuryādātatāyinamapyuta
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Sthala Purana: Not a site-legend; it is a moral clarification: even ‘good’ social credentials (āstika, sudharmiṣṭha, mānya) do not license violence or becoming an ātatāyin.
Significance: Frames dharma as internal discipline: the devotee’s safety lies in not generating fresh pāśa (bondage) through हिंसा and aggression.
Role: teaching
It teaches that dharma cannot be sacrificed for personal loyalty or social reverence; avoiding aggression and incitement protects one from binding karma (pāśa) and supports inner purity needed for Shiva-realization.
Linga worship in the Shiva Purana is inseparable from ethical discipline: devotion to Saguna Shiva is validated by dharmic conduct, and restraint from harm becomes an offering that aligns the devotee with Shiva’s auspicious nature.
Practice japa of the Panchakshara (Om Namaḥ Śivāya) with a vow of ahiṃsā and right speech—avoiding instigation—supported by daily Tripuṇḍra (bhasma) as a reminder to burn anger and violent impulses.
