Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Āghoramūrti
Significance: Ethical purity (ahiṃsā etc.) and bhasma-dhāraṇa are universal Śaiva marks; they prepare the paśu for Śiva’s grace by reducing mala and pratibandha.
Role: teaching
It teaches Shaiva discipline (ācāra): true purity is not only external but also mental—one must renounce forbidden acts like violence even at the level of thought, while sustaining a life of Śiva-oriented purity symbolized by bhasma.
Linga-worship in the Shiva Purana is supported by inner and outer observances; bhasma and proper Shaiva marks cultivate remembrance of Saguna Śiva, while mental non-violence and restraint purify the devotee for deeper communion with the Linga.
Maintain daily Shaiva conduct: avoid prohibited actions even mentally, apply bhasma (Tripuṇḍra) as a sacred reminder of Śiva, keep disciplined attire and cleanliness, and use this purity as the basis for mantra-japa and Linga-pūjā.
