The Sequence of the Second and Third Enclosure Worship (Āvaraṇa-pūjā)
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Sadāśiva
Sthala Purana: Not a Jyotirliṅga account; this is the culmination of the āvaraṇa scheme: through three enclosures one worships Mahāviṣṇu (‘Viśva’), indicating a harmonized pantheon within a Śaiva ritual architecture.
Type: stotra
Offering: dhupa
It teaches that devotion becomes “direct” (sākṣāt) when worship is structured and complete—symbolized by three āvaraṇas—so the deity is approached as the all-pervading reality, not merely an external image.
In Shaiva Siddhanta, saguna worship is a valid means (upāya): concentric āvaraṇa-pūjā trains the mind to move from outer forms to inner presence, culminating in recognition of the Supreme who pervades the universe—an approach harmonious with Liṅga-arcana and graded worship.
Perform arcana using a three-tiered (try-āvaraṇa) method—worshiping in successive enclosures—while contemplating the deity as immediately present (sākṣāt) and all-pervading; this can be paired with japa and inward recollection during pūjā.
